Product data is a discovery channel: keep product pages, schema, and merchant feeds aligned

At a glance

A practical audit for the product facts shoppers and search systems rely on: price, availability, variants, shipping, and returns.

  • Treat the product page, structured data, and Merchant Center feed as three representations of the same offer.
  • Audit the fields that change a shopping decision, especially price, stock, variants, shipping, and returns.
  • Check a representative sample after promotions, feed changes, and template releases—not only when a report shows an error.

Start with one source of truth per field

A shopper sees a product page, while search and shopping systems can also use product structured data and Merchant Center feeds. These should describe the same purchasable offer. When they disagree about price, availability, or a variant, the customer experience and data quality both suffer.

Name the owner of each field. Merchandising may own title and description, ecommerce operations may own availability, and a feed team may own mapping. Clear ownership makes an audit fixable instead of becoming a list of unexplained inconsistencies.

Audit the facts shoppers use to decide

For each sampled product, compare the visible page, structured product data, and feed record. Check the regular and sale price, currency, availability, product URL, image, title, brand, identifier, and selected variant. Add shipping and return information when it is part of the offer shown to customers.

Google's product documentation distinguishes individual product pages from category pages and recommends keeping merchant product data complete. It also notes that dynamically generated product markup can be less reliable for fast-changing price and availability information, so test the rendered product page rather than assuming the template is enough.

Keep it consistent

  • Price: current price, currency, sale duration, and the page's visible offer agree.
  • Availability: the feed, markup, and product page reflect the same purchasable state.
  • Variants: each selectable option maps to the right price, image, URL, and identifier.
  • Policies: shipping and return information is accurate where it is presented to shoppers.

Sample for the cases that usually break

A homepage sample is not an audit. Include products with a discount, out-of-stock products, multiple variants, a newly added item, an older item, and products with different templates. If the store serves different currencies or regions, check each relevant storefront deliberately.

Compare facts at the same moment whenever possible. A price promotion can change between page view and feed processing, so record the capture time and distinguish a temporary timing difference from a persistent mismatch.

Run the audit after meaningful changes

Put a lightweight audit next to the release process. Run it after a product-template change, a feed-mapping update, a large promotion, or a new market launch. A scheduled sample can also catch drift before it becomes a customer-support or reporting issue.

Keep the audit output simple: product URL, field, page value, structured-data value, feed value, capture time, and owner. That format gives a team enough evidence to fix the mismatch without turning the report into a technical investigation.

Use the result to prioritize fixes

Prioritize mismatches that block a purchase or materially change a shopper's expectation: a wrong price, incorrect stock status, broken variant, or missing product URL. Then address fields that improve clarity and discoverability, such as richer descriptions, images, shipping, and returns.

Gluecrawl can help collect a representative product dataset and surface where page facts differ across a catalogue. The store team remains responsible for the source-of-truth rules and the final correction, but structured evidence makes that conversation much faster.
